Metal Gear Solid 2 – Plant

Welcome to the Metal Gear Solid Plant Walkthrough. Please note that the choice of difficulty for this Walkthrough is based on Normal which could be the difference in quantity of items, an enemy’s vision, how much life you have, quantity of enemy’s in an area, and how much damage you can tolerate.

Enjoy!

Plant 1.1

-Strut A Deep Sea Dock-

Soldiers: 2
Ration: 3

(Watch Cutscene)

You’ll want to head North and up a small flight of stairs. There are 2 rations in this room. One on the other side of a ventilation system, which starts by the stairs. There is another ration in the middle locker by the door.

Go through the door at the North end of this room, and press Triangle to start opening. If you want to open it quicker, tap Triangle more rapidly.

(Watch Brief Cutscene)

Go through the door you just opened and head around the corner.

(Watch Cutscene)

Guess who was on the elevator.

In order to turn on the Radar (if you are using it), you need to activate the “node” at the North-East part of this room. Just walk up to it and hit Triangle. You may be asked to enter information about yourself. Once you’re done, go hide until the elevator comes back. Keep in mind that once you go up the elevator, you won't be able to go back down until later on in the mission. The soldiers will wake up about 2 seconds after you activate the node.

(Watch Cutscene)

After the Soldiers wake up and put you in caution, the elevator will soon arrive with a brief cutscene. I would probably still wait for the caution meter to drop to 0 so that there is less chance of you being discovered. However, if you do get caught, the guards can’t be sent backup since the elevator is on your floor.

You will eventually want to get on it either way. It is of course to the North by the node.

-Strut A Pump Facility-
Bandage: 1
M9 ammo: 1 (need M9 first)

On the left side, there is a fence with a hole cut near the bottom for you to crawl through. You may get a call from Campbell about it. So just tap X and move your left analog stick to lie down and move. Once you’re through, you will get another call from Campbell.

-Strut A Pump Room-
Soldiers: 1
Socom: 1 (need Socom first)
Ration: 1

Go down stairs for a short cutscene.  The node will be in the North-East part of the cubical. If at anytime you get spotted in this room, you can hide in the locker if no one sees you’re on Evasion by the time you’re in it. I like to keep the doors open so I don’t waste time opening them if I get myself caught.

Once you have that activated, head out the door on the North-West for the AB connecting bridge. You don’t technically have to, but it makes it easier if you hang across the bridge behind the soldiers back.  You’ll get a call from Campbell about it.

Head through the next door into Strut B.

-Strut B Transformer Room-
*Socom
Socom ammo: 2
Ration: 1

Proceed.

(Watch Cutscene)

There will be another node next to where Pliskin is sleeping along with some Socom ammo. Be careful with your new gun. It’s loud, so if you fire it near someone, they’ll likely hear it.

Anyway, if you call Pliskin (141.80), the call will just be of him sleeping. If you save and reload the game, Raiden will be amazed that he is still sleeping.

If you check the lockers, you will find Socom ammo and a ration near the other door. Go out that door.

(Watch Cutscene)

-BC Connecting Bridge-
Chaff Grenade: 1

Go across the bridge and you will find some chaff grenades where the huge gap is. You can use those to knock out electronic equipment temporarily like surveillance cameras.

Plant 1.2

-Strut C Dining Hall-
*Microphone
*Sensor A
*Coolant
*Level 1 Key Card
Ration: 1
Pentazemin: 1
Socom ammo: 1

Go down the hallway and to your left. Don’t worry, there aren’t any guards here, yet.

(Watch Cutscene)

Your objective now is to dispose of those bombs. The 1st thing you should do is activate the node located in the very North-West corner of the room you’re in. There is a table just South of the node with a ration underneath. Get it if you have room. Note that if you leave and come back, there will be 2 guards so make sure you’re ready before you leave. Call Pete if you need to at 140.25. Both him and Pliskin provide useful information.

There is a bomb in the women’s room in the South-East of the room you’re in. The bomb is located above the mirror on the right. If you equip sensor A, you’ll see it on your radar. Use your coolant to spray it until it’s been deactivated.

Head out the next door.

-CD Connecting Bridge-
Soldier: 1
Camera: 1
Ration: 1

I would wait for the Soldier to come near you while hiding around the corner. Then when he leaves, go up to him and do whatever you need to do to incapacitate him. If you go downstairs, you will need to run across because the floor will drop beneath once you walk over certain parts.

Watch out for the camera on the other side. You can use your chaff grenade, or watch it on the radar and go when it’s not looking, but lean against the wall. Go through that door.

-Strut D Sediment Pool-
Soldier: 3
Socom: 1

This part is a little tricky, especially when the node is a little distant. The node is downstairs and to the east, but there are 3 soldiers you need to get by, while one of them does a continuous status check. If you take out the soldier who updates, there will be a search team to look for him. However if you find an effective way to hide him, they will give up and not even send a replacement.

My best advice is to study their routine.  They basically do a bunch of circles, so you can predict what they will do next by simply studying them. Just make sure you don’t leave bodies laying around for someone else to find.

The node will be downstairs to the east, and the bomb is also downstairs but to the west. It’s inside one of the vent holes. It’s black and you open it by pressing Triangle. There are a couple of them, but it should be the last one you see.  Head out the door on the east side after deactivating the bomb.

-DE Connecting Bridge-
Soldier: 2

There will be a soldier on top of the next strut. Look out for him because he will be able to look out and see everything. There is another soldier lurking that you can take care of though. There is actually a 3rd soldier on the roof, but he doesn’t do much. Enter to the next room on the other side of the bridge.

-Strut E Material Distribution Facility-
Soldier: 2
Ration: 1
*Cardboard Box 5
*Mine Detector

There will immediately be a soldier there that does updates. The node is just down to the East. The easiest thing to do is wait for the soldier to stretch, or turn around. Don’t go when he is asleep because he will probably wake up a second later. Once he either stretches or turns his back, go East right away and you will see a node in the corner. You could also crawl across if you stick close to the belt.  To the South-West, you will find stairs that go down where you will find a mine detector and a ration stuffed in a vent.

Go upstairs which is East in that room. Go outside.

-Strut E Heliport-
Soldier: 3
Stun Grenade: 1
Claymore: 1
*Box 3

Go West.

(Watch Cutscene)

If you go upstairs then North, you will find a Jet Plane or Harrier. The Bomb is located underneath it. It may be easier if you took out the soldiers first. It will be placed on the rear wheels.

After you get rid of the bomb, go downstairs back into the Strut, then head out the door to the next bridge. This door will be on the South-East side.

-EF Connecting Bridge-
Camera: 2

The 2 floating cameras (cyphers) can be taken out with your Socom. Don’t worry about the noise, there aren’t any guards here. Head South and receive a Codec call from Mr. X. Use your mine detector if you found it. If not, then just crawl South. Whatever mines you come across while laying down, you’ll automatically pick them up and stashing into your inventory instead of taking damage. Then just head South into Strut F.

-Strut F warehouse-

This part may appear challenging because you can’t see where any of the enemies are or anything. You can always back track by going around back through all the Struts and start off at a different door. If you start somewhere else, you may have a better view of where your enemies are.  If you like, head back around and to Strut B (where you met Vamp and Pliskin) and take out the bomb there first. This time, there will be 2 guards though.

The bomb will be behind an open door. The door you came in, if you go to the nearest door, and equip sensor A, you will be in the location. But you have to close the door like a locker to be able to see it. It’s there immediately as you go in the little room. Face the wall to the West and press Triangle to close it. Now head to Sturt A.

-Strut A-
Soldier: 2
Camera: 1
Ration: 1
*Box 1

You will need to go through the room to the South East. There will be another guard in there along with a security camera. The best way to deal with these in my opinion is to choke the soldier by the node, then go ahead and shoot the one where all the pipes are at, then shoot the camera. Then you will have no one to worry about.

In the room with the pipes, you will need to crawl to get to the Bomb. If you head further South East, you will find a small set of stairs. Go up them and down, then crawl under the 1st set of pipes you see. Then turn left. Keep crawling left until you see more pipes. You will see 2 pipes running South. You will need to crawl under the copper looking one and crawl parallel to it. You will eventually find the bomb.

For Box 1, the stairs are to the South West. Go up those and down them. Crawl right and through the pipes. To your South are some boxes. Press Triangle to crawl up them. You will find the Box.

Now head out the door to the North East.

-FA Connecting Bridge-
Camera: 1
Soldier: 1
Chaff Grenade: 1

Take out the lone soldier, then proceed to Strut F. Preferably on the top floor for now.

-Strut F warehouse-
Soldiers: 3
*M9
M9 ammo: 3
Ration: 1
Pentazemin: 1
*Box 2
*Socom Suppressor
Socom ammo: 3
Chaff Grenade: 1
Magazine: 1
Stun Grenade: 1

You will immediately see a soldier around the corner. He has a walky-talky. There is also a room directly east that doesn’t need a key. Take him out and immediately drag him into that room. The best way is to wait for him to come up, then he will turn around. Immediately put him in a hold up by holding Square behind him. Carefully let the gun down, unequip it and drag him by holding Square then bring him to that room.

Wait for the search team to look for him until they give up. You have to be quick in dragging him however because there is another guard who might see you if you’re not fast enough. Also, get the M9 in that room where you dragged him. You shouldn’t have to worry about status updates anymore.

Go ahead and head back out. Wait for that other guard who is close by, them take him out and drag him into the same room as the other guard. Use the same technique if you need to.

Then there will be one last guard who is downstairs. You can get an easy view of him in 1st person, so go ahead and shoot him in the head. Then go downstairs and to the South West, there is a room with a node in it to activate the radar. There are items in the lockers, but to the South, there is a vent you can go through. On the other side, there is a Socom Suppresser and Socom ammo. Equip the suppresser and gun at the same time to make them go together so now you won’t have to worry about noise when you fire your Socom.

Go back upstairs and go to the West side of the railing. If you hang on the side, land on some boxes then drop on them. There will be the other bomb.

After disarming it, you will automatically call Stillman. He will tell you to get Sensor B which is in the pantry where he was hiding. Go back to the Dining Hall in Strut C.

This time when you enter Strut C, there shouldn’t be any guards. Go to the pantry to the North and go inside where Stillman was hiding to pick up Sensor B. Then you will get a call

Plant 1.3

So you will have 400 seconds to get rid of the last bomb. Don’t worry, you’ll have plenty of time as long as you go by my instructions

You need to get to Strut A. So head out by going South to the BC connecting bridge. The cypher camera you can deal a couple of ways. Either shoot it around 3 times to destroy it, use your chaff grenade to confuse it, or just wait for it to duck and make a run for it. Either way, you’ll be ok as long as you don’t get caught.

In Strut B, just take out the guard in the hallway with your tranquilizer. Then be careful with your steps to make sure the other guard doesn’t hear them. Then run out to the AB connecting bridge.

Continue along the bridge without getting caught. Hopefully you tranquilized one of the soldiers earlier.

You should now be in the Strut A Pump Room. Go upstairs. Either way is fine to get to the roof.

On the roof be careful of the guard patrolling the area. If you are not careful, you can slip over bird crap and fall which can compromise your stealth. Just get on the elevator and head down. You will receive a Codec call from Stillman.

After you’ve made it down, head out to the pool where you first started off. There won’t be any guards so don’t worry. You should probably have over 200 seconds left. Go around the pool and get to the East side of it. Above the pool will be this thing that looks like a submarine or something, but underneath it, there is the bomb. Use your coolant to deactivate it. You may want to get closer to it if the coolant doesn’t reach.

Go back up the elevator, but you will 1st run into Fortune.

Plant 1.4

(Watch Cutscene)

Ok, all you need to do is stay alive. Don’t try to approach her or shoot her, you’ll end up taking a lot of damage.  Just crouch behind one of the crates but stay away from and gasoline cans. Eventually, the crate you’re hiding behind will probably be destroyed. Just find another crate and stay put. After some time, it will be over.

(Watch Cutscene)

So now you only have 400 seconds like before. Again, that’s plenty of time. However, you need to equip the mine detector once you get to the roof of Strut A. There will be mines planted for you to walk over as a trap. You can pick them up though and put them in your inventory by crawling over them. There shouldn’t be a guard patrolling the area so don’t worry about anyone there.

You will need to go back up to Strut E and on the roof where the Harrier was/is.  So back track all the way there. Ideally, you should go through Strut F to get there instead of going the long way. Check your map by pressing START to figure out which way to go. On the roof, take the door to the east for the quicker way.

Once you go downstairs to Strut A, the guards will have new patrolling areas. Just wait for them to either be distracted, or turn their back to walk another way, then hold them up by standing behind them and holding Square. Once the guard puts his hands up, just run out the door to the FA bridge. You can go ahead and take him out if you want, but you should be quick enough to just run out the door.

In Strut F, wait for the 1st guard to turn around and immediately put him in a hold up, and then shoot him in the head preferably with the tranquilizer gun just in case another guard sees him. After you shoot him, just immediately make the first left, then right, and continue to go through the door in the back to EF bridge.

On the EF bridge, go into 1st person and if you aim, it should automatically go to the soldier on top of Strut E. Follow him with your gun and shoot him. You will hear him moan if you’re successful. Then proceed to Strut E.

In Strut E, the guards will have the same routine. It might make it easier to use one of the boxes to conceal yourself as long as you’re not caught moving around. Then head upstairs to the heliport. There won’t be any guards on the heliport so just continue upstairs. You will find a bomb out in the open compatible with sensor A. Freeze it

This concludes Plant 1
