Rations: 1
Chaff Grenades: 1
*Cardboard Box A
*Mine Detector
*Socom Suppressor
Welcome to Part 2 of the Metal Gear Solid 1 Walkthrough!
Your objective is to go meet Dr. Hal Emmerich to get information about Metal Gear. You will need Meryl’s assistance to guide you a little bit.
Notice that there is only 1 tank in this room instead of 2.
Start off by immediately heading East (right) and use your new Key card to access the door on the East wall. Inside, there will be a sleeping guard and a Socom suppressor. You can now use your Socom to take out enemies without making noise once you equipped them both at the same time (suppressor is in your items list).
Head out and go up stairs and use your new Key card to access Level 1 on the 2nd floor of this area. The room is not marked on the radar until you enter it, so I suggest you look for this room (right next to the stairs), and make sure the card is equipped. There will be a cardboard box inside with some chaff grenades. The cardboard box is a classic item used by Solid Snake to hide from enemies. You can use it to hide from the enemy as long as you are not on Alert mode and don’t do anything a stationary box wouldn’t do (move).
Continue along the railing on the 2nd floor but you need to be careful with your footsteps because there is a guard there and he will investigate if he hears you.
Once you found your way around the guard and camera, make sure your Key card is equipped and enter the Level 2 room. In it will be a mine detector which will most definitely prove useful in the near future. You will also find a ration in this room.
Now you need to call Meryl (the female soldier). But where is her number? If you contact Campbell, he tells you it’s on a CD case. What CD case? I have a Disc… but it says nothing about any Codec frequencies.
Get this, it’s literally written on the back of the Metal Gear Solid CD case. If you don’t have it, don’t worry. The frequency is 140.15. This drove me nuts, until I decided to take a moment and think outside the box a little.
Call her.
She will tell you to wait before she can get the Cargo door open (which is that huge door on the North end of the wall, next to the room with the suppressor). I’d use this time to go down in the Armory (B2) and stock up on anymore supplies, like grenades especially because you’ll need all those you can stock up on for the near future. Just don’t forget about the trap doors.
Go back up and you will immediately receive a call from Meryl claiming that she unlocked the door.
[Brief Cutscene of door opening]
Go to the opened Cargo door to the right of the elevator, you can’t miss it. After you proceed a little, you should get a call from Meryl saying to watch out for the infrared sensor beams. Do be-careful. You are going to have to equip the Cigs in order to see the beams. Proceed with extra-caution.
-Canyon-
Soldiers: 0
Rations: 2
Claymore Mines: 5
*Level 3 Key card
Open the huge door at the end and go outside. You will get a call from “Deep Throat” warning you about claymore mines that you cannot see. This is why we have the Mine Detector. Once you equip it, you will see where the mines are located on the radar. Make sure your white dot (that’s you) doesn’t enter the yellow cones on the radar or you will take damage. Don’t be too alarmed, because if you crawl over the mines then they will end up in your inventory for you to use later! In fact, by crawling alone, the Mines won’t detect you even if you enter the yellow cones.
Proceed North.

This is probably the tank missing from earlier. Well, now you have to fight it which is why you have the Grenades that you were suppose to get before Meryl could open the door.
All you really need to do here is toss grenades on top of the Tank for it to take damage. This will require you to get a little close which is why you need to watch out because he will not hesitate to run you over. Watch out for his missiles, that takes a lot of damage.
Nastasha (141.52) will give you hints about how to take on weapons of any kind in this game. Call her if you need any hints. Meryl is also a little useful. They will both tell you to use your Chaff grenades in order to confuse the tanks electronics.
A direct hit with the Grenade can cost it half of its life, but that’s a little rare. Expect to take it out with around 2-4 hits. The goal is to try and get as close to the hole at the top as you can because that’s where the enemy will be firing from.
